Bid Early, Bid Often!
No, it’s not a PBS fundraiser, and we’re not giving away tote bags, but we are making big changes to AdBID, our annual fundraising auction. This year, we’ve gone “e bay” with all the excitement of an on-line auction featuring a bunch of media packages and other cool stuff. No need for a babysitter, and no mileage on your car, you can sit in the comfort of your own home, or take advantage of the free wi-fi at your favorite coffee shop, while you bid on the AdBID on-line auction. The bidding action starts on May 7 and continues to May 18. If you are the highest bidder, you’ll be notified the following week. Check out the items up for sale by clicking on the AdBID link. All proceeds from the auction help us continue to bring you the speakers and programs that benefit your career and keep you up to date with the latest technological advances. Support your Club and, as they say on PBS, bid early, bid often!
Thank you to all the members and nonmembers who helped with our research project. We will carefully compile all the information you gave us and use the data for strategic planning as we continue into the second century of the AdClub. Just as our industry has grown and changed over the decades, the Advertising Club of Toledo needs to continually grow and evolve to meet the changing needs of our members. Thanks again for giving us some help in that evolutionary process.
Remember that the Advertising Club of Toledo exists because of its members. The more you participate and contribute, the more you get back in business contacts, career development, and social activities with people who share the same dedication to the local advertising and marketing community. Be ACTive, and see where it can take you.
April Article
“Weak advertising tells people what you want them to know. Strong advertising gets people to conclude what you want them to know.” – Ed McCabe
The quote above is from real-life mad man Ed McCabe, a Madison Avenue pioneer in the 60s and 70s. It’s from an article from the New York Times that I read about this veteran advertiser who created some brilliant brand images back when 3 martini lunches were the norm. Brands like Volvo, Hebrew National Hot Dogs and Perdue Chicken, that live on with the brands that were built in part by Ed McCabe’s words.
Things have changed a lot since those cocktail and tobacco fueled days, but the basic responsibility of helping to shape a brand image for our client has not changed. Sure, we have different tools in our kit now, but the heart and soul of the creative individual is still the driving force in successful advertising and marketing. What fun to watch the problem solving of the creative team at Sterling Cooper Draper and Price Sunday night in the long-awaited premiere of Mad Men, with their “bean ballet” and pantyhose slogans.
And speaking of new ways to do things, AdBID is going digital! The annual fundraiser for AdClub will be easier than ever with on-line bidding only for your favorite advertising packages and items. We’re collecting items to auction like media packages, creative services, printing, photography, web design, or whatever you do to help your clients achieve their marketing goals. We’ll also accept gift certificates to area restaurants, sports, retail emporiums, and visitor attractions. As always, proceeds will help us to continue to bring you quality programs and events, as well as scholarships for the next generation of mad men. Click here for all the information on donating and bidding on the new and improved AdBID 2012.
Don’t have anything but time to donate? Great! We need new candidates for the Board of Governors, and the main requirement is a few hours of your time each month. Board membership adds a whole new dimension to AdClub membership. It’s a chance to get to know a diverse group of like-minded individuals, advance your career with networking and new business connections, and have a lot of fun in the meantime. And you get the joy of guiding this 103 year old Club into the future. Make your mark in the local advertising scene and become part of the Board of Governors. Our fiscal year ends on June 30, so contact Patty for information and details.
Congratulations to Hart and Madhouse for their District 5 Gold and Silver ADDY Awards, and to Adams Street Publishing, Eric Eggly Photography, Level 2 Audio and Sheroian Associates for their Silver ADDY Awards. Next the Nationals!
And finally, a reminder to get your AdBID Donations together and take some time to enjoy the early spring weather. I’ll see you at The Toledo Club on April 18!

March 2012 Article
And what a night it was! ADDY night 2012 is but a memory now, and if you missed it, you missed the event of the year. Over 300 people enjoyed cocktails, browsing the entries, and watching the winners being announced during this year’s live show. Hilarious videos and an interesting line-up of presenters kept it moving as we built up to the winners and the Best of Show. For all the results, click on this ADDY Winners link. A big thanks goes to Michael Seay and his entire merry band of mirth makers. And I again want to thank the UT Department of External Communications for the concept and design work, all the sponsors and in-kind donors, and the many committee members and volunteers who helped with collection, judging day, ADDY production, and event set-up and tear down. We could not do it without you. The biggest thank you goes to Executive Director Patty Schoepf for all of her planning and hard work that makes it all look so easy.
Congratulations to Jerry Brown, our Silver Medal Award winner. He is truly deserving of this distinguished honor.
We still have a few official 2012 ADDY Dog Tags on sale for only $5. This trendy fashion statement will not only complement any wardrobe, it will help to fund the ROTC program at UT, which helped with the ADDY show in so many ways. See? I told you that you missed quite the show. To make up for it, you can buy your own ADDY Dog Tags. Contact Patty for all the details.
Want to be a part of all the fun? Here’s your chance! We’re looking for a few members who want to increase their business contacts and have a showcase for their talents, whatever those may be. Be ACTive and become a member of the Board of Governors! We meet monthly for an hour over lunch and everyone works on a committee, like Social events, Programs and speakers, Marketing & PR, and even ADDY Awards! In all honesty, I have made some lifelong friends through my Board involvement, and I treasure every experience. Do yourself a favor and join the Board.
And speaking of fun, the annual bowling event, AdPIN is scheduled for Friday, March 23 at Rossford Lanes. This year, we’re having Glow Bowling, so drag out your Day-Glo clothes and head to the alleys for some adult beverages, big sandwiches and a lot of laughs. Don’t have a team but want to bowl? Call the AdClub office to see if any teams are short of a bowler.
I hope to see you all on Wednesday, March 21 at the Toledo Club for our monthly luncheon. The speaker, Kimberly Kaufman will talk about her success in marketing to a very small niche target audience. And for this month’s Need A Hand/Lend A Hand Collection, please bring an item from the Beach House Wish List. The Beach House is a family shelter that has helped needy families in Toledo for decades. Every item you bring buys you a chance for a $25 gift certificate for The Andersons. Patty is taking reservations now, so there are no excuses. See you there!
February 2012 Article
“An idea can turn to dust or magic, depending on the talent that rubs against it.”
–William Bernbach
It’s ADDY time again! Time for all the excitement and fun of finding out who was successful at turning ideas into magic this year. This year’s festivities are happening at The Pinnacle on Thursday, February 23, so don’t miss your chance to be part of what is sure to be the event of the year, AdClub style. And yes, there will be a new video introduction by the one and only Michael Seay and Nick Amrhein. Don’t forget we’ll also be awarding the Silver Medal Award, the AAF’s highest honor, to this year’s most deserving recipient. And of course, all of the entries will be on view, so you can see for yourself the amazing creative work that comes from our talented and brilliant members. There are still sponsorships and tickets available so call or email Patty at the AdClub office now.
Another great annual event to prepare for is AdPIN, our one-night bowling event, featuring some of our favorite things – big sandwiches and cold adult beverages. This year, we’re spicing it up a little by turning off the lights for Glow Bowling. Black lights, beer, and bowling teams sound like Toledo to me. Don’t forget the trophies … 1st, 2nd, 3rd and Best Effort teams will be awarded. With the black lights on, maybe we’ll see a little Day-Glo ink on some of the team uniforms. Registration for your 5 person team is $125 and includes 3 games, shoes, prizes, and the aforementioned big sandwiches. There is a cash bar. All of this will happen at Rossford Lanes, 969 Dixie Highway, just down the road from the new casino. Start getting your team together now so you don’t miss the fun.
If you have an idea for another kind of fun night, like an AdTINI or other networking event, just let Patty know. We are always looking for a reason to party it seems, so if you have one, we’ll help you celebrate. Maybe you want to show off a new office, or maybe you want to host something to announce something new. Or, even if you just want to hang out with other people who are part of our crazy industry, call Patty at the AdClub office, and we’ll work out something that will make us all happy.
One of the things that would make me very happy is to welcome you to the AdClub Board of Governors. Maybe networking and getting to know some new people is not of interest to you. But if you want to promote your business, support the local advertising community, and make some new friends, join the Board. Board members attend one meeting a month and commit to working on one of our committees. It’s a great way to get to know people from all aspects of our advertising community and have a lot of fun in the process. We will be looking for new Board members to replace those retiring as well as officer candidates. Contact me or Patty for more information on the AdClub Board of Governors.
See you at the ADDYs!

January 2012 Article
Happy New Year! I hope 2012 will bring us all good health, happiness and prosperity in the months to come. Now that the holidays are over, it’s time to get busy and implement those marketing plans your clients made for the new fiscal year.
And of course, it wouldn’t be January without ADDY collection and judging! You may not be aware that I have been volunteering to help with ADDY collection and judging for many years. One of my first jobs was helping the judges with AV, showing TV spots on a Beta or 3/4” player and listening to cassette tapes of radio spots. Then I helped with tabulating the judges scores, computing each judge’s score for each entry on a calculator, adding all the judges scores together, and tabulating the average for the actual score. Now I sit at a laptop and enter the scores into a special ADDY scoring program online, where the AAF software gives me the score in seconds. The judges always come from outside our market area, and are creative directors and agency principals with agencies and small shops from surrounding states. But one thing is the same every year, and that is the confirmation of the talent of our members. Your entries shine with original ideas, creative problem solving, and just plain beautiful work. So get involved with the excitement of this year’s ADDY Awards, and order your tickets now. Better yet, be a sponsor, and help us make the night special for everyone.
A note of thanks goes to the University of Toledo’s Division of External Affairs for their clever and imaginative theme, “The Few, The Proud, The Creative.” Be sure to reserve Thursday, February 23 for ADDY night and see what our immediate Past President Michael Seay comes up with for an introduction this year! You’ll also be able to view all of those creative entries, sip a cocktail, and rub elbows with Toledo’s advertising elite. If you’d like to volunteer to help with judging activities or set-up and preparations for the ADDY show, contact Patty at the AdClub office.
While you have Patty on the phone, make your reservation for the January luncheon. On Wednesday, January 18, Larry Burns, VP of the Office of External Affairs will speak about creating an integrated marketing plan using all the components to their fullest potential. Sounds like a great program, so make your reservation today! Bring a personal grooming item (soap, deodorant, razor, shampoo, conditioner, lotion, etc.) for either a man or woman to donate to St. Paul’s Community Center. Even though the holidays are over, the need for help does not stop in our community, so let’s keep giving to those less fortunate, all year round.
Last but not least, get your bowling team together for AdPIN, our annual one-night competition on the lanes! Rossford Lanes is the place again, but this year, we’ll light up the alleys with Glow Bowling for added bowling fun. Win prizes, eat big sandwiches, drink adult beverages, and let your hair down with AdClub in the alleys on March 9. Watch for more details, or call Patty at the AdClub office.
A Special Message from the President
Long-time AdClub friend and supporter, Joe Metzger, will be taking time off work to concentrate on being a cancer fighter. I know I speak for all AdClub members as I wish him courage, strength and success in his journey to return to good health. Please keep Joe and the entire Metzger family in your thoughts and prayers. For status updates on Joe’s treatment, please sign up at: http://www.caringbridge.org/visit/joemetzger.
December 2011 Article
Time has done it again. Suddenly, I’m reaching the half way point in the fiscal AdClub year, cold weather has arrived, and the holidays are upon us. Seems like summer was yesterday. I feel good about the progress your AdClub Board has made in trying to chart the way to another hundred years of serving the advertising and marketing industry in the greater Toledo area. I hope you have been able to attend our recent luncheon meetings and AdWORKS, where we have presented some nationally-known speakers on the latest topics to keep you on the forefront of the industry. I’ve learned new things that I am putting into practice with clients, and creating billable hours for me. I don’t know about you, but I love to grow my business while offering my clients the latest tool in the marketing arsenal, which then helps to grow their business, too. Isn’t capitalism a wonderful thing?
Speaking of capitalism, that orgy of spending known as the holiday shopping season is here! Wondering what to buy for everyone on your shopping list? The AdClub is pleased to once again bring you “Our Favorite Things” with Westfield Franklin Park Mall and Levis Commons. Join us at the Toledo Club on December 7 for what has become one of our favorite events. Chrys Peterson will again guide us through the most creative and exciting holiday gifts this season from stores at both shopping meccas. Enjoy a delicious holiday-themed lunch while we draw names for lots of exciting give-aways, like gift cards and certificates for local restaurants and stores. Contact Patty at the AdClub office for reservations. And bring some socks for Hannah’s Socks and the chance to win special prizes!
As the calendar year winds down, think about all of the fabulous work you’ve created over the year, and pull out your best. It’s time to prepare your ADDY submissions for this year’s celebration of creativity. ADDY Call for Entries will be in your mailbox soon, and now that you have your 2012 calendar, mark Friday, January 6 as ADDY Collection day.
And if you’d like to help with entry collection, judging day assistance, the ADDY show, or event set-up and tear-down, please contact Patty, and we’ll find you a slot. Volunteering on a committee is one of the best ways to maximize your AdClub membership. Besides the ADDYs, we have a variety of committees that need your assistance with events or projects. Get involved and be ACTive!
Finally, I’d like to wish everyone the best for the holidays. Please take the time to reflect on your blessings and remember those who are less fortunate. See you at Our Favorite Things!

November 2011 Article
“Your time is limited, so don’t waste it living someone else’s life. Don’t be trapped by dogma – which is living with the results of other people’s thinking. Don’t let the noise of others’ opinions drown out your own inner voice. And most important, have the courage to follow your heart and intuition.”
Steve Jobs
I know that much has been written and said about Steve Jobs in the past few weeks, but I couldn’t let the opportunity pass without reflecting on the changes that his creative genius brought about in the advertising business. With the advent of the Macintosh, the tools and functions of our industry completely changed. Like the buggy makers before Henry Ford, typesetters and keyliners became obsolete. What was once done by hand, using X-Acto knives, rubber cement and mechanical T-squares, is now done in an instant with the click of a mouse. Our black-and-white world went 4-color. And his what-ifs didn’t stop there, with increasing technological advances and unheard-of devices he revolutionized not only the way we work, but the way we connect and communicate with our clients and the world. Thanks, Steve. We’ll miss you.
Our November luncheon should be of interest to just about anyone interested in digital marketing, PR, social media and communications, and that’s just about everyone. Andrea Vascellari, CEO of itive.net, founder of media channel VMC, and blogger, will be at the Toledo Club on Wednesday, November 16, to share his unique insight and knowledge. Thanks to Joe Pinciotti for bringing us this international superstar in the on-line marketing world. And don’t forget to bring a pair of socks! We’re collecting them at the luncheon for Hannah’s Socks, a local organization that provides warm clothing for the homeless and needy.
And I hope you’re all planning your ADDY entries! The call for entries will be coming soon, so keep your eyes open. Collection will be Friday, January 6 at PointSeven Studios again. Thank you Eric Eggly! This year’s show will be at The Pinnacle on February 23, and it promises to be another exciting and fun-filled evening. Who will win this year’s Silver Medal Award? Know somebody who is worthy? Get your nomination in before November 21.
Finally, a big thanks to AdWORKS Chair, Sara Shiels and committee members Karen Hopkinson, Cindy Hauff, Leasa Maxx, Patrick Giammarco, Steve Israel, and Tim Speweik for the donation of their time and their talents. They booked speakers, found sponsors, and took care of about a million little details that went into making a successful event. Also stepping up to help us this year with financial or in-kind donations were Presenting Sponsor The Blade, H.O.T. Printing & Graphics, Maxx Marketing & Design, Cumulus Toledo, PromoHits, Toledo & Signature Harley-Davidson, R/P Marketing Public Relations, Perry Corporation, 2020 Exhibits, Off Contact Productions, Mail Works, Commerce Paper, Adams Street Publishing, AIM Specialists, Buckeye TeleSystem, in-house communications, LaPrensa, The University of Toledo Department of Theatre & Film, and Time Warner Cable Media. Please help us thank these businesses with your patronage. They care enough about AdClub to support our programs and our members, so please return the favor with your support of their businesses.
See you soon!
October 2011 Article
Holy seminar, Adman! It’s AdWORKS!
That’s right, all you marketing and advertising superheroes. AdWORKS 2011 is nearly upon us and if you’re not registered yet, better get a move on. Friday, October 14 is your chance to hone your superpower skills and add the latest weapons to your marketing arsenal. There is something for everybody, with great presenters and a variety of topics that are guaranteed to fire up your creativity and provide you with new weapons in the fight for Advertising Greatness. And we’re talking Superpowers here, like Harley-Davidson, maybe the world’s most successful brand, and McCann Detroit with their enchanting “Pure Michigan” campaign. Don’t miss this chance to learn something new to impress your clients and shock and awe your competitors with your superior knowledge and powers. We need your registration by Friday, October 7, so make it faster than a speeding bullet! Click on the links in the newsletter for all the information and registration forms.
And speaking of Advertising Greatness, start thinking about what you’re going to enter in the ADDY® Awards this year. Entry Drop-Off for all those creative masterpieces will be Friday, January 6 at PointSeven Studios (again) just off Briarfield in Maumee. Then put a circle around Thursday, February 23, for the big ADDY show at the Pinnacle with another creative video production from Michael Seay and Nick Amhrein. I can’t wait to see what those two come up with this year! So when you have a lull in all those client budget-planning meetings for 2012, start getting your entries together and put those dates on your book.
While you’re in that ADDY frame of mind, think about who you’d like to see honored as this year’s Silver Medal Award winner. Before you ask, I don’t know why there’s no Gold Medal! From the AAF website, “The American Advertising Federation’s Silver Medal Award Program was established in 1959 to recognize men and women who have made outstanding contributions to advertising and who have been active in furthering the industry’s standards, creative excellence and responsibility in areas of social concern. Annually, AAF member clubs bestow this honor upon outstanding members of the local advertising community.” Couldn’t have said it better myself. Know any AdClub members who may fit the criteria? Check the Silver Medal information in the newsletter and check our website to see past AdClub Silver Medal winners – maybe it will spark an idea. This has been around since the real Mad Men days!
Did I say Mad Men? If you’re having Mad Men withdrawal like I am, take heart. We’ve got an AdTINI coming up that will help us all to cope a little better until the real thing is back on the air. I promise it will be an extra relaxing one. Want to sponsor an AdTINI OR a Monthly Luncheon Program? Luncheon sponsorships are only $300 and you get a chance to put up and man a display during the networking time and give your best 5 minute sales pitch at the meeting. Contact Karen Hopkinson, Program Chair or Patty Schoepf, Executive Director Extraordinaire. They’ll hook you right up.
Hope to see you all at AdWORKS and our upcoming Luncheon Programs. Remember, the more you put into AdClub, the more you get out of AdClub!
September 2011 Article
Get psyched! September is upon us and it’s time to get back to work. Your AdClub Board has been busy all summer planning events and lining up speakers to make our 2011-2012 activities fun and informative.
First off, I want to salute the valiant and brave volleyball teams who waited out the storm to finish the annual sand volleyball party we like to call AdBASH. Definitely an event that will be remembered and talked about for years to come. I’m not sure if it has ever actually hailed during the tournament before, although I do remember one at LaJolla Beach Volleyball Club when the tornado sirens went off. Now that was a storm! So if you missed it this year, start getting your team together now for AdBASH 2012 and another memorable event. Thanks to Greg Reece and Tim Speweik for putting together the festivities.
And speaking of events, on September 21 we kick off this year’s Monthly Luncheon Programs with a presentation from Matt Harlow of Perry Ballard in St. Joseph, MI. Matt has put together a new program specifically for us on professional applications for social media. He’ll go into business to business ideas and applications for sales professionals. Check out his message to you at http://www.harcorps.com/ and make your reservations for a fun and educational luncheon.
Can’t forget to mention AdWORKS! Sara Shiels and Karen Hopkinson have been slaving away, combing the nation for exciting and relevant speakers and boy are they good. We’ve got an exciting line-up for October 14 that will include marketing and advertising experts from Harley-Davidson and Google. We are especially pleased that The Blade has agreed to be our Presenting Sponsor this year. Lots of sponsorship opportunities are still available, so check it out on our website while you make your reservations for the day. Thanks to Maxx Marketing & Design and H.O.T. Printing & Graphics for the “super” design and printing for the invitation. Coming soon to a mailbox near you!
I hope to see you at these great upcoming events. Support your AdClub, have a little fun and learn something at the same time. It’s a win-win situation.
August 2011 Article
Where has the summer gone? It’s August already! That’s the refrain I hear from nearly everyone I talk to lately. Time flies, as the old proverb says, and it seems the older we get, the faster the time goes. Remember the endless summer days of childhood, free from all responsibilities? Playing in the sunshine, swimming and riding bikes, and chasing fireflies as the sun sets and the first evening star appears for wishing. As an adult, summer has come to mean road construction traffic jams, worries over high bills for AC on sweltering days, and watering the lawn.
So stop for a minute and try to get back to the excitement of summer. All too soon, we’ll be complaining about wind chill factors and measurable snow amounts, so get out and enjoy the summer we still have left! Go to a fair or festival, the Lake Erie islands, a ball game, or whatever special summer pleasure you fancy. Eat sweet corn and tomatoes from the garden, take your kid for ice cream, or fire up the grill for an evening with friends.
One AdClub summer tradition is the volleyball tournament we like to call AdBASH. Get a team together with coworkers, or just come down and enjoy the volleyball, food, music and networking at this annual celebration of sport, sand and beer drinking. Click on this link for more details.
And if you haven’t sent in your membership dues, what are you waiting for? We’ve got big plans for some pretty fantastic events, including a revamped AdWORKS October 14 and another ADDY Award celebration by the inimitable Michael Seay. I can’t wait to see what he dreams up this year!
Monthly Luncheon Programs return on September 21, so mark your calendar for an informative presentation on Social Media Applications for Business to Business marketing and other professional uses. Matt Harlow, of Perry Ballard in St. Joseph, MI is preparing this special presentation just for us. You won’t want to miss this opportunity to learn something new about the hottest trend in marketing today.
Want to help plan any of these events? It’s a great way to get to know more AdClub members and have some fun at the same time. Contact me or Patty for information on committees and get involved! This is your Club, so make the most of your membership and be ACTive. It’s good for business!

July 2011 Article
Don’t find fault, find a remedy.
Henry Ford
Happy New Year! Fiscal, that is. And the beginning of my year as President of the Advertising Club of Toledo. I am so happy to have the opportunity to give back to the Club that has given so much to me over the years. I’ve made lifelong friends, learned a lot, shared belly laughs and tears, and enjoyed working with the most creative and innovative leaders of the advertising industry in our region.
The first AdClub meeting I ever attended was way back in the late 70′s, before Macs were invented, and the good-old-boy network was in full swing at the bar in the Belvedere Room, guzzling martinis and manhattans before and during the meeting. The Club has changed a lot since then, and so has our industry, with technology to help us work faster, more efficiently and increasingly more detached personally from clients, associates and providers.
As we look to the next hundred years of the AdClub, it’s time to look at the future of the Club itself and our place in the local and regional business picture. We’re going to examine our brand and do some research and look for ways to make the Advertising Club of Toledo more relevant and responsive to our members’ needs and wants today. Instead of complaining about things that aren’t working anymore, we’re looking for new solutions and new ideas. We may be calling on you to give your opinions, your thoughts and your help in transforming the AdClub back into the premiere professional organization for marketing and advertising professionals in our region.
One thing I know that hasn’t changed and never will is the fact that you only get out of the Club what you put into it. Getting involved, whether it’s working on a committee or helping with an event, is the best way to connect with other professionals and make the most of your membership. The networking opportunities and personal rewards are unparalleled. They have helped me build and maintain my business over the years, and I know the AdClub can do the same for you no matter what your professional status.
I look forward to getting to know you and to hear what you have to say, so please feel free to contact me with your concerns or ideas. Working together, we will all succeed.

“Being a President is like riding a tiger. A man has to keep on riding or be swallowed.”
- Harry S. Truman
This concludes your tour of the Advertising Club of Toledo. Please make sure your tray is in the upright & locked position as we land. 12 months ago I offered to serve as your tour guide of our AdClub. We successfully made it through our 100th year as an organization. Our second annual AdWORKS claimed great success as many in our community turned out to hear keynote speaker and Honorary Member of ACT, Dr. Martha Rogers. Then in November we celebrated the holidays (and shopping) as Chrys Peterson presented the 2nd annual “Our Favorite Things” from Westfield Franklin Park & Levis Commons. Later that month I got my present early as Tony Calcao, V.P. & Group Creative Director at Crispin, Porter & Bogusky joined us to explain the creative process behind some of their most high-profile clients. We closed out 2010 in style, with a recap of the Cannes Advertising Reel.
Since entering into 2011, your AdClub has carried a high level of energy and I had the distinct honor & pleasure of hosting a packed room at the 2011 ADDY Awards. It was an amazing opportunity for me to interact with so many folks that participated in the return of the live show, entered amazing work and those who attended the event. I think I will hold a debt of gratitude all my life for those that made my entrance video so memorable, especially the legendary Mae Jo Ritchie.
Our social events this year have been a lot of fun. Volleyball, tennis, bowling and the introduction of AdTINI have rounded out some wonderful networking/fun opportunities. Under the watchful eye of seasoned Social Chair Greg Reece and his apprentice extraordinaire Tim Speweik, these events remind us why this club remains so great.
Last month we hosted AdBID, the annual casino/auction/musical/party event. (Yes, there was something for everyone.) Again this year it was held at the Toledo Country Club and we couldn’t have painted better weather. A lot of hard work went into the preparation of the event and I cannot tell you how grateful we all are for everything Julie Walker, from Impressions Media Group, did as co-chair of the event. Many board members also helped with the event and I must say that Cindy Hauff from HOT gets an honorary MVP award for her help with the 50/50 and more. BeInstrumental is an absolutely priceless organization and we are very proud we had the opportunity again this year to partner with them. Money was raised for both organizations and everyone seemed to have a blast. Bravo!
Looking forward there is a lot on the horizon for our club. Growth and relevance remain the keys to our success. Patrick Giammarco is currently leading a team through the brand discovery process and some programs are being considered to help bring in new members that will assist in breeding creativity. There will be much more to come regarding these exciting developments, so please stay tuned!
I am proud to join a long list of past President’s of the Advertising Club of Toledo and look forward to the experience, leadership and guidance that your new President, Kathy Jex, will be bringing. Kathy has served on our board multiple times and has proven to be key in many of the events and initiatives that make our club incredible. Please take a moment to welcome Kathy to her new role.
This experience has simply been unforgettable because of two things that are ever so vital. The first is the best Board of Directors ever assembled. For an optimist like me, they represent exactly what it takes to create success and keep the train on schedule. The second should go without saying by now. Patty Schoepf, our Executive Director, possesses a heightened level of organization, commitment and drive that could never be matched. I am very grateful for the past year of her leadership, friendship and advice.
I really hope you can join us to celebrate the past year and meet the new officers for next year at the upcoming luncheon on Wednesday, June 15th at The Toledo Club featuring Sharon Toerek who will be letting you know “How to Stay Out of Trouble with Social Media”. Thank you for your membership and allowing me the past year to be a part of it.

May 2011 Article
To help all of our members this month, I’ve checked with every venue, organization and promoter in the area and can verify that there is absolutely nothing going on in the tri-state area in May. This should hopefully make it very easy for you to commit the following two events on your calendars.
First, Dr. Gene Poor will be presenting at our May 18th luncheon at The Toledo Club. His topic is Entrepreneurship in a Crazy Economy and it is always a great privilege to tap into his knowledge & expertise. Member cost is the usual $20 and we look forward to seeing everyone in attendance.
The second May opportunity is AdBID, the hybrid casino night/silent auction/party fundraiser will take place throughout Toledo Country Club on Friday, May 20th. This event is going to be an amazing time, featuring live music from Ad Astra, great silent auction items including those valued media packages, tons of delicious food and casino tables that give you the chance to win some great prizes! It will be the perfect opportunity for an evening out with friends or co-workers. To reserve your tickets, available for $35 each or 10 for $300, contact Patty by e-mail or call 419-866-4199.
I am very pleased to announce that this year your AdClub has partnered with Destination Toledo to present the 3rd Annual Tim Beckman Celebrity Golf Classic! This 4-person scramble will take place on Friday, June 10th at Maumee Bay State Park Golf Course. Come enjoy the day and network with other AdClub & Destination Toledo members for $480 a foursome/$120 a golfer. Coach Beckman will be on hand for this fun day filled with golf, food & drinks and some great prizes. Space is limited and this will sell out. To secure your spot contact Gretchen Mikolajczak, Director of Membership at Destination Toledo at 419-321-5043 and be sure to let her know you’re an AdClub member!
Finally I would like to extend sincere congratulations to the 6 companies that won top Gold & Silver honors at the Fifth District ADDY Awards. Let’s cheer them on and wish them all luck as the winners will be announced at the National ADDY Competition on June 4th in San Diego. Bravo!

April 2011 Article
Is that warm weather or am I dreaming?
Finally the snow has thawed and we’re seeing glimpses of warmer weather as we enter into April. I’d stand on my chair and yell a “woo hoo!”, but that probably wouldn’t be good etiquette. Speaking of good etiquette, this month we welcome Jill-Marie Zachman to our monthly luncheon program on Wednesday, April 27 at The Toledo Club. She will be speaking on Etiquette Essentials for an Electronic World, which will hopefully explain the new rules for business on texting, social media connections, e-mail and more. To reserve your space, contact Executive Director Patty Schoepf.
We may be months away from spending time at the new Hollywood Casino – Toledo, but the AdClub has you covered in May with our annual FUNtastic event, AdBID! This year AdBID will take place on Friday, May 20 at Toledo Country Club. As always, there will be “fun money” casino tables, great food, music and incredible auction items. We are currently looking for companies who would like the opportunity to sponsor a gaming table at the event. By hosting your own table you can choose to be the “dealer” and meet attendee’s one-on-one. Also, we are actively looking for silent auction items. If your company has some promotional items, event tickets or anything else interesting, please contact Patty and we’ll arrange to pick it up. Invitations are also on their way out soon, so be on the lookout for yours!
Finally, I want to put out a call for anyone interested in serving on the Advertising Club of Toledo Board of Governors. Nominations or interested parties need to contact Patty Schoepf by the end of April. Serving on the board has been a great experience for me. I would encourage anyone interested in becoming very involved in our industry and/or our community to run. There are many new & creative opportunities in the works for 2011-2012 that will need the energy & talent of a strong board.
Until next time, keep on #WINNING!

March 2011 Article
That’s a wrap! The 2011 ADDY Awards are now in the records book. Congratulations to all the Gold, Silver & Bronze winners and a job well done to our 2011 Best of Show, Bowling Green State University. The creative field of entries this year truly made the job of our judges very difficult.
I’m very honored to be involved in the same organization as our 2011 Silver Medal Award Winner, Joe Pinciotti. His talent and dedication to his clients, his craft and his community could serve as the official playbook on how to be the best. During his acceptance speech he humbly reflected on those he had worked with and the family that helped to make him what he is today. For many the Silver Medal serves as the pinnacle of one’s career, but with Joe I believe the best is still yet to come through many more years of his work.
The 2011 ADDY Awards show was a culmination of creative talents. Please see the article below thanking these individuals and know that you are dealing with industry experts in using any of their services. The Advertising Club of Toledo will be looking for those wanting to be a part of the show next year. If you or your company would like to help, please contact our Executive Director, Patty Schoepf.
In March there are two great events planned for members & guests. The first is our March luncheon program featuring Peter Bowerman. His Grab The Edge! presentation will feature 10 Proven Strategies for Staying One Step Ahead of the Competition. The second event in March is our annual AdPIN Bowling Tournament. This event is always a lot of fun, so round up your team of 5 and enjoy a great evening out!
I personally want to thank everyone who entered and/or attended the 2011 ADDY Awards. As Chair of an event, you have moments when you wonder if everything is right. With an increased number of entrants & attendees this year, you’ve validated that we’re doing something right. Your AdClub Board of Directors is committed to increasing the value of your membership and welcome any comments or suggestions. Thank you all again.

ADDY Thank You’s!
written by: Michael Seay, ADDY Chair
Following the ADDYs I received many calls, e-mails and verbal congratulations for “one of the best shows” the Advertising Club of Toledo has ever put on. Like every great recipe, the ingredients of this show each contributed to the final success. The expertise of Greg Bollin and the team at RGB Productions, combined with the quality of their top notch equipment gave the show a presence that rivals anything I’ve seen regionally. The creative genius of Dustin Hostetler presented a cleverly unusual look & feel to all of the collateral material for the ADDYs. The commitment of Danielle Zieler and my ADDY Co-Chair Molly Luetke Datson, both from FLS Marketing, brought the on-screen presentation to life. Our brilliantly creative announcer Scott Greggory from ScottVoiceovers.com & BusinessVoice reminded us how entertaining words can be.
The Silver Medal video was produced by Kathy Jex of In-House Communications and shot & edited by Mike Hoge at BCSN. Thanks to Homewood Press for printing the invite, tickets, call for entry and the winner’s book. Mail Works handled the mailing of all pieces. Off Contact Productions provided the incredible banners on stage and at the entry points. PointSeven Studios again served as the drop-off and judging location, while Eric Eggly personally took the time to shoot every winning entry for the on-screen presentation. Our show Director was Russ Grycza from Penta Career Center and Steve Campos of 7th Floor Media handled the music for the ceremony. Also, thanks to 2020 Exhibits for providing us the units that held the hundreds of entries on display.
H.O.T. Printing & Graphics provided that Bronze certificates & envelopes. Our event photographer Enoch Wu from Toledo.com has posted our photos here, so definitely check them out. Nick Ahmrein at 3byOne Media did an amazing job with the video that opened the show. Dave Shoffer at Prodigy Music Company provided A/V assisting services and the A/V entry DVD was created by Annie Baibak & Ron Schultz at Buckeye CableSystem.
Bravo to all and thank you!
February 2011 Article
Wow, the Advertising Club of Toledo has some incredibly talented members. This is something I have assumed for a long time, but was able to confirm this when looking at all the amazing entries submitted for the ADDY Awards this year. With 258 entries striving for the top slots, competition was very tough this year. I overheard our judges discussing how very alive the advertising industry is in Toledo, evident by the quality and creativeness of the entries. To everyone that was involved in creating and producing these bodies of work, you should be very proud.
Come see these entries for yourself and celebrate the winners at the ADDY Awards on Thursday, February 24 at The Great Hall at the Stranahan Theater. This year we will be having a Live Show with presenters, dinner and many surprises. You will not want to miss this show and the presentation of this year’s Silver Medal Award winner. Gather up your friends and co-workers and join us for the 2011 ADDY Awards! To secure a table or tickets, contact Executive Director Patty Schoepf at 419.866.4199 or by e-mail at director@adclubtoledo.org.
If you cannot wait for the ADDYs or just enjoy a fun networking cocktail hour, then come to the “Pre-ADDY AdTINI” taking place Tuesday, February 8 at the Rockwell Lounge at the Oliver House from 5:30 – 7:30. Enjoy complimentary appetizers, $5 pitchers of Buckeye beer and of course it wouldn’t be an AdTINI without the $5 Tia Martini. There is no cost to attend and your guests are welcome.
In keeping with the fun theme of our club, make sure to save the date on your calendar for AdPIN, the annual bowling “tournament” competition. We will be returning this year to Rossford Lanes on Friday, March 25. Details to follow, but start rounding up your 5-person team!
Finally, I ask you all to take a quick look here for current needs of the community as requested through our Need a Hand, Lend a Hand program. It is a great chance to use your talents to help some very deserving organizations prosper. Also, please let us know of your success story so it can be featured in our newsletter.
Thank you all for making this a great start to 2011 by being members and participating in all the worthwhile events. Please let us know if we can do anything to make your member experience better.

October 2010 Article
We are less than 2 weeks away from The Advertising Club of Toledo’s biggest event. The 2nd annual AdWORKS will take place Friday, October 15 at the Dana Conference Center/Toledo Hilton. This Marketing & Advertising showcase was recognized at the Saatchi & Saatchi Advertising Education Awards in the American Advertising Federation’s (AAF) National Club Achievement Competition for its entry in the category “Advertising Education”.
This year AdWORKS is shaping up to be an exceptional event. First, Dr. Martha Rogers is returning to Toledo as AdWORKS Keynote Speaker. She is a treasure to our industry and we are very lucky to have her join us at a time when area businesses are looking for direction in growing. Assisting with providing help are the many Breakout Session Presenters and Exhibitors from our membership that have signed on to be a part of this event.
Invitations were mailed out last week and our partnering organizations (Toledo Chamber of Commerce, Destination Toledo, Sylvania Chamber of Commerce, Better Business Bureau, and the Center for Nonprofit Resources) have engaged their members to help promote the benefits and importance of attending AdWORKS. We ask that you also include an invitation to your clients, possibly in your newsletter or e-mail distribution. Your clients will appreciate your involvement and see you as their partner in helping to grow their business.
to register, visit: http://adworkstoledo.com/Registration.htm
November is also shaping up to be a huge month for our club. On Wednesday, November 3, “Our Favorite Things” returns to The Toledo Club to help you prepare for all the hottest items coming in Holiday 2010. The first-class host of this event is the woman I have dubbed “Toledo’s Oprah” – WTOL’s Chrys Peterson. Chrys will be joined by Sara Young from Westfield Franklin Park and Casey Pogan from The Town Center at Levis Commons. Retailers from both will show you what’s going to be hot and there are sure to be a ton of giveaways and certificates for all!
You have all seen the controversial Burger King ads, the rebranding of Domino’s Pizza, and the “Double Rainbow” ads for Windows. The same advertising & design factory responsible for these ads also has clients such as Best Buy, Ikea, American Express and Coca-Cola Zero. How do they come up with these amazing ideas and campaigns? Find out for yourself on November 17 when Tony Calcao, Vice President & Group Creative Director of Crispin, Porter + Bogusky will fly in to speak at our luncheon at The Toledo Club. This will be an amazing experience and we are grateful to have this opportunity.

September 2010 Article
Is summer really ending already?? I guess it’s not really a bad thing, since things at the AdClub are just heating up. We are just over a month away from the biggest event of the year as AdWORKS is taking shape and growing. In case you’ve been enjoying the weather and have not noticed, AdWORKS 2010 is taking place on Friday, October 15th at the Dana Conference Center/Toledo Hilton. Invitations to attendees will be sent in a couple weeks and you will also start seeing the media blitz of print, TV and web everywhere. On a conference call we had with our Keynote Speaker, Dr. Martha Rogers, she expressed great interest in returning to the area where it all started. With preparations for a new book on the way, she has a lot of great insight to talk to us about. There is still exhibitor space available, but very limited. Sign up now to secure your spot by contacting Patty at director@adclubtoledo.org, and take full advantage of being noticed as an exhibitor. For those who have not sent in your annual dues yet, you will want to do this ASAP to be featured in the annual Program Directory given to all AdWORKS attendees. Advertising space is also available for an increased presence.
If you’re not familiar with AdWORKS or didn’t attend last year, we will be hosting a Pre-AdWORKS version of AdTINI at 31 Hundred at The Toledo Hilton on Wednesday, September 8thfrom 5:30 – 7:30. This will give you insight as to the best practices for exhibiting, what to expect at AdWORKS and let you meet with other AdWORKS exhibitors and organizers. Appetizers will be complimentary and a cash bar will be available featuring the $5 31-Tini. Everyone is welcome to join us, for directions, go to www.31Hundred.com.
The first luncheon program in our series this year opens up with Carrie Johnson of Fraser Clemens Martin & Miller LLC. She is joining us to speak about “Trademark, Intellectual Property, and Technology Law”. This should be very informational for those wanting to learn how the process works, changes that might impact your current Trademarks and tips & tricks to navigate the process effectively.
Finally this month I want to thank all that came out to support AdBASH! Congrats to Team Subway (Eat Fresh!) on their first place win and hats off to the very impressive winners of “Best Dressed” – Interrupt Marketing. It would definitely be worth your time to view the pictures listed on the AdClub website here. Thanks to all of our sponsors, especially WT05 – Toledo’s CW and Interrupt Marketing! Great job Social Chairs Greg Reece and Tim Speweik for helping put this together!

Food will be provided by Subway (Eat Fresh!) and a big thank you to all of our sponsors. Remember, there is a prestigious award for the best dressed team, have fun with it!
AdWORKS 2010 should also be on your calendar and hopefully you all are getting ready to put your talents on display for the business community. October 15thshould be circled with a big red star as the AdClub takes over the Dana Conference Center at The Toledo Hilton. With the new location, we’ve expanded our capabilities for exhibiting and entertaining prospects, but space is limited and will fill fast. If you haven’t yet reserved exhibit space or found a fit for sponsorship, give us a call! We can work to provide the perfect opportunity for your business to stand out.
One way to stand out at AdWORKS is to be featured in the annual Program Directory, given to every attendee. Your membership automatically guarantees you a spot in this “Who’s Who” takeaway guide. To take advantage of this, you need to send in your renewal information & payment no later than September 1st. Renewal packets were mailed June 1st, if you did not receive a packet you can click here to find all the information you need. We’ve also released new Corporate Membership levels to allow for more members from your office and to create a more “all-inclusive” experience. Please call or e-mail Patty if you have any questions regarding the levels of membership.
Your AdClub board is hard at work and energized to make your membership worthwhile. As always, please let us know if there is something you would like to see. Those ideas and creativity lead to things like AdWORKS and incredible social events.

Hello, my name is Michael and I’ll be your AdClub President for the next 12 months.

On our journey I will introduce you to the incredible and fun opportunities available to you as AdClub members. We’ll encounter the ups & downs of this fluid economy, but the common goal of a marketing & advertising-rich community with numerous success stories will hopefully prevail.
You may notice by the adaptation of our logo that the Advertising Club of Toledo is 100 years old! We were able to take a glimpse back at history last month at our dinner program, Reminisce: An Evening of ACT Presidents. Heartfelt thanks to all of those past Presidents that participated as part of the panel and have held this office before me. I also would like to acknowledge and thank our newest addition to the past Presidents club, Sara Shiels. The now Ex-Officio has been a fantastic leader of the club and will continue to help us grow by serving as Chair of the 2ndannual AdWORKS. Be sure to take a look at the AdWORKS page on our website to view her incredible bio. At the latest, you will want to have them in by September 1stto have a listing in the Program Directory that will be distributed to all that attend.
This month Max & Erma’s is featuring an Advertising Club of Toledo fundraiser on July 29th. Be sure to print the flyer on our website and take it in for lunch and/or dinner. The AdClub will then receive 20% of the profits! We encourage fasting for a couple days prior, allowing for the maximum amount of deliciousness!
In closing I would like to remind you to BeACTive and take full advantage of YOUR AdClub. We are extremely privileged to have one of the greatest assemblies of talented individuals with this years’ Board of Directors. It certainly is amazing how quickly a year can go by! I can’t believe I am already writing my final article as President. The year has had it’s challenges, but this has truly been a wonderful experience. I have always been a proud and active member of AdClub, and have enjoyed spending the last year being involved with basically every event and program the club puts on. And I will continue my involvement with the Club and also continue encouraging you all to get involved! BeACTive – there are so many opportunities for you to make this Club what you want it to be. Even if it’s just sending an email to share your ideas or thoughts we’d love to hear from you!
I would like to thank the Board for their contributions this past year. It truly does take everyone’s help to bring so many great events and programs to fruition. With so many individuals who are passionate about the betterment of the Club and the community we have created a year where I can proudly say I was President. The biggest milestone of my term was our first AdWORKS. I believe this is an event that is going to change how the AdClub is viewed by it’s members and the community. It’s such an important way for our membership to showcase themselves to the community. We are in the planning stages for AdWORKS 2010 – so be on the lookout for more information soon. Save the date of Friday, October 15 at the Dana Conference Center.
I’d also like to thank our Executive Director, Patty Schoepf. Patty keeps this Club running like a well oiled machine. It is truly an honor to work with someone who knows the AdClub so well. From its history to its future opportunities, Patty is the most valuable resource of the Club. So next time you see her, be sure to thank her for all she does!
The future of the AdClub looks great with the amazing talent and commitment of the incoming Officers and Board. And you are sure to see a lot of energy from your next President, Michael Seay from BuckeyeTeleSystem. Michael has been bringing great ideas to the Board for many years, and I can assure you the next year will be no different. It will be very exciting to pass the gavel to Michael at our June program.
I hope to see you all on June 16 for our special dinner program as we introduce our new Officers and Board of Governors. This program will also feature a panel of some of our finest past Presidents talking about the achievements of their terms, how the industry has changed in our city and anything else you want to ask them! We’ll kick the evening off at 5:00 p.m. with networking and a cash bar followed by the program and dinner at 5:30.

The reason so many of us get involved with professional, charitable, or networking groups is to be a part of something and support our community or our interests. With AdBID, the Ad Club’s yearly fundraiser just around the corner we are looking for YOUR help and support! Here’s how you can help:
- Take part by sponsoring a casino table and having the opportunity to deal a few hands, or be the bar sponsor and buy the first 50 people of the night a drink!
- Or help by contributing an item for the silent auction.
- But most importantly, be sure to get your tickets to the event – $35 each or 10 for $300.
With our Guitar Hero Theme and the added benefit of partnering with local charity BeInstrumental, we’re planning on a sell out crowd this year, so get your tickets soon! Visit www.adclubtoledo.org for complete event details and to see all of the great auction items you can bid on.
Another way you can support the Club is to get involved with our Need a Hand, Lend a Hand initiative. The Ad Club website is now a place where you can lend your many talents to local non-profits in need. Visit www.adclubtoledo.org/public-service to tell us more about what you can offer. We are in need of every service possible: web design, creative development, strategic planning, writing and anything else you are willing to offer that local non-profits may need! As the Club receives inquiries for those in need of a helping hand we will match them with someone who has the time and resources to help.
The best way you can give your time to the Ad Club is to join the Board! We are taking nominations for terms beginning in July. Please contact Patty Schoepf at director@adclubtoledo.orgto nominate yourself or a friend. With many committee opportunities to choose from you can make your mark by being ACTive!
Many Thanks,

You may be looking out your window at inches and inches of snow, but I promise you that this month will bring spring! Well… at least astronomically. So to help you get through these last winter blahs, the Ad Club has a few exciting events planned.
First, on March 17, our new Mayor of Toledo, Mike Bell will be our guest speaker for the monthly luncheon program. Mayor Bell will tell us about how he plans to market a new Toledo. Grab a few friends or coworkers and hear what he has to say.
Then wrap up your week of St. Patty’s Day parties with the ultimate party – AdPIN! Reserve your team today and see Ad Club bowling at it’s finest. This year we encourage you to pick your own theme for the night. And don’t forget, we’ve moved to Rossford Lanes located at 969 Dixie Hwy.
So by the time you’ve recovered from AdPIN you’ll be that much closer to spring showers and April flowers. And to AdBID on Friday, April 30th! Start practicing your Guitar Hero to be the rock star of the night. Or maybe blackjack is your game, we’ve got that too. If you are looking to get a really great deal on some silent auction items be sure to check our website often to see what we’ve got to offer. But if you are just looking for a great night out with friends we can definitely help you there too. This event is being held at the beautiful setting of the Toledo Country Club on the Maumee River where spring is sure to be in full force.
At this time I’d like to thank all of you who were a part of the 2010 ADDYs! Whether you attended the event to check out your competition, or were recognized with a prestigious award, or donated your time or service to pulling the night off, or worked on a piece that was entered in the show – we need all of you to be a part of this great advertising community here in Toledo. Thank you for your continued support and interest in creating a great club.
Many Thanks,
Sara Shiels, Toledo.com

February 2010 Article
February may be the shortest month of the year, but for the AdClub it’s action packed.
We’ll kick off the month with another reason to get together with good friends for a cocktail – AdTINI! This social event will be held on Thursday, February 11 at the fabulous Georgio’s. Stop out for drink and appetizers and talk about who you think is going home with the most ADDYs!
Then on Thursday, February 25 join us for great thoughts and a great night at the Great Hall at the Stranahan Theater – it’s the ADDYs! Check out the gallery of incredible work your Toledo AdClub has to showcase. I’m so proud to be President of a club with so much talent! And this is our night to honor all of you who have submitted your work and are such an important part of the AdClub. We will also be honoring our Silver Medal Award recipient. Join us to see who has been chosen to receive this honor of distinction. So bring those important clients and all of your coworkers to celebrate your work. Contact Patty now for your tickets: $45 each or 10 for $400.
AdPIN 2010 is going to be the greatest bowling event yet! Pick your own theme, get your team of 5 together and register now! Friday, March 19 at Rossford Lanes (please note this is a new venue – we’ve been at Interstate Lanes in the past). So get ready to Rock N’ Bowl, Quiz Bowl, Super Bowl or just Bowl!
As I mentioned last month, planning is underway for AdBID! The event will be held on Friday, April 30 at the Toledo Country Club and we intend to bring out your inner Guitar Hero. A portion of the funds raised will go back to our community by supporting the local charity BeInstrumental. Complete details will be made available to you soon, but start digging out those old instruments you haven’t played in years and donate them at AdBID to BeInstrumental to be used for music education in your community.
The AdClub is always looking for ways to give back to our community. Visit our website for information on Need a Hand/Lend a Hand. We aim to match not-for-profit organizations who don’t have a budget for advertising and design services with those who can help. Sign up now and we’ll contact you when we have a group in need.
Please also encourage any students you know to apply for the AdClub scholarship. Information and the application are available on the website – the deadline to apply is March 1.
Many Thanks,
