Jim Link has spent nearly his entire career generating, refining and marketing new ideas. His creativity has attracted many of the world’s biggest and brightest companies. He began his marketing career at General Mills, where he led new product efforts in the Snacks, Cereal, and Meals divisions. Seeking to branch out into even more categories, Jim started one of the world’s first idea companies in 1994.
Since then, Jim has worked with over seventy organizations, most household names such as 3M, General Mills, Nestlé, Toro, Levi Strauss, McDonalds, Kohler, Marriott, Land O’Lakes, Heinz, Case-New Holland, Cargill and The Masters at Augusta. His twenty-five years of new product and idea-generation work include experience in over 160 different categories, spanning both consumer and B2B. Through it all, Jim has chosen to remain a one-man shop, focusing on doing the work he loves.
In addition to his consulting work, Jim conducts training workshops on creativity and positioning. He’s an instructor at the prestigious 3M Marketing University, which reaches marketing, sales, and communication professionals across the globe. He also teaches creativity as a guest lecturer at major universities. He received his BA from Ohio Wesleyan University and his MBA in marketing from Michigan State University.
His first book, IDEA-LINKS: The New Creativity hit the shelves in March, 2012.
An avid but shockingly unproductive fisherman, Jim lives in Stillwater, Minnesota, with his wife, Janet, and their three children.

AdWORKS 2012 will focus on two critical aspects of creativity: 1) how to build creativity as a skill and 2) how to create an environment and culture that encourages employees to use more of their existing creativity.
Jim Link will present a two-hour workshop teaching us how to build our creativity by following two simple disciplines that creative people have followed most of their lives. This is the same workshop Jim has presented to major corporations such as 3M, General Mills, Land O’ Lakes, The Toro Company and Kraft.
The New Creativity Workshop—Jim Link
A 2010 IBM poll of 1,500 CEOs identified creativity as the #1 leadership competency of the future. Yet, most employees have no plan for increasing their creativity, nor do their bosses have a plan for helping them. We spend most of our effort trying to unleash creativity, rather than building it as a skill. The skill-building part of creativity remains mysterious and seemingly out of our control. That is, until now.
In an engaging, hands-on workshop, Jim Link strips the voodoo and mystery away from creativity and reveals it for what it is—a discipline and skill that with some effort anyone can master. What is the key to building greater creativity? Making idea-links—the hidden idea-making elements that have always been there, responsible for the seemingly random aha moments once attributed to serendipity. Once you see creative moments at the idea-link level, they no longer seem so random. And once you understand how to create and apply idea-links yourself, you’ll finally see how anyone can become more creative.
In a presentation full of examples and immediate application to a variety of business types and functional areas, Jim Link will forever change how you think about creativity. Creativity will move from being a mysterious, uncontrollable force to a tangible, understandable skill that can be systematically built over time.
“Jim Link debunks the notion that creative ideas are the province of a special few. He provides a practical blueprint and set of tools that anyone can follow to unleash big business building ideas.”
— Ian Friendly, Chief Operating Officer, General Mills, Inc.
“Jim breaks down the mysteries of the creative process into simple, accessible steps that any individual or group can use to meaningfully turbo-charge their creative output.”
— Peter Horst, Chief Marketing Officer, Capital One
“Jim Link has transformed the way we think about creativity at Land O’Lakes. Thanks to his workshop, our marketers are better able to make connections across our business portfolio, as well as apply insights from other products and industries to our own.”
— Michelle Freedman, Director of Corporate Marketing Strategy, Land O’Lakes Inc.
