The evening started with current Advertising Club of Toledo President Sara Shiels, from Toledo.com, welcoming everyone and thanking her board of directors. She then introduced the incoming 2010 – 11 board and officers and presented the coveted President’s Award to AdClub Executive Director, Patty Schoepf, for her longtime support and leadership of the organization. Scholarships totaling $2,300 were then awarded to 3 college students, from the AdClub Scholarship fund administered by The Toledo Community Foundation.
Sara then did the official “passing of the gavel” to incoming President for 2010-11, Michael Seay of Buckeye TeleSystem. Michael thanked Sara for serving her term and presented her with flowers and a plaque with a mounted gavel as thanks. Michael then reflected on the past few years of advertising in a down economy, stating that those businesses who took a chance and spent on advertising are now seeing the benefits of that investment.
Kathy Jex, incoming 1st Vice President, read aloud a letter from 1956 written by Ralph L. Sisson of Storer Communication, which was found in the ACT archives. The letter detailed the history of the AdClub, dating back to 1909. It recorded the forming of the Better Business Bureau and the creation of the “You’ll Do Better in Toledo” slogan. Dick Eppstein from the Better Business Bureau handed out a document from the first meeting of the BBB in 1919 which showed all of the companies that gave money to start the organization. The first name on the roster was The Advertising Club of Toledo, which gave the first $500. Mr. Eppstein noted that most of the BBB’s in the U.S. were started by the local AdClubs, as a way for them to self-regulate the “Truth in Advertising” legislation.
Greg Gettum from TMACOG and AdClub President 2000-2001 served as host of the evening which featured a panel of 16 past Advertising Club of Toledo Presidents. George Korhumel was the president with the eldest term, serving in 1957-58. Each past president shared stories of their term, and reflected on their challenges and successes. Many laughs were shared and guests enjoyed looking through the display of items from 100 years of Advertising Club of Toledo history.
